Day 2, Prague, Karlovy Vary Hot Springs & Moser Works

We venture out through the beautifully scenic countryside of the Czech republic to the small town of Karlovy Vary. It is famous for its hot springs and its colorful and whimsical architecture. For these reasons, it was a popular tourist destination in the 18th century with guests including Tsar Peter the Great, Beethoven, Wagner, Brahm and, Tolstoy. After WWII, the largely German speaking city was cleared of its original inhabitants and replaced with Czech settlers. Czech remains the major language today but the signs of German culture and heritage are still very evident. It gained its reputation thanks to the discovery of hot mineral springs the history of which originates in the Middle Ages. The waters are used to treat all kinds of disorders. Today there are 12 hot springs in use here, and you get the chance to try them.

First we’ll begin with a tour of the glass exhibition of the Moser factory. After lunch you will be shown around the Karlovy Vary Spa center and you may have a swim in the Thermal hotel swimming pool. The spa is well known and the largest spa in the Czech Republic. It originated around 1350 by the Roman Emperor and the Czech King Charles IV.

The town of Karlovy Vary, along with Prague, was the filming location of many scenes identified as being in Montenegro in the 2006 movie Casino Royale.

Day 2, Prague, Kutna Hora, Kolin

On our adventure today we will visit the town of Kutna Hora, a pretty town, now listed by UNESCO. It was a silver mining town, founded in the 13th century, and was once second in importance to Prague. You can visit the old mint and the impressive late Gothic five-naved St. Barbara's church. The Gothic Stone Haus, which since 1902 has served as a museum, contains one of the richest archives in the country. You can also visit the Sedlec Ossuary, where you can see pyramids, chandeliers and fonts made from 40,000 human skeletons.

In addition to Kutna Hora, you will see Kolin, a beautifully preserved medieval town that has been declared a National Landmark. One of the oldest Jewish settlements in the Czech Republic, Kolin's 300-year old synagogue, the ancient cemetery (where Rabbi Low's son and Morchedai Maisel's nephew are buried), and the picturesque "Golden Lane" in the Jewish Quarter offer a window back into Jewish life in Bohemia. On this tour, you will visit a combination of Jewish and non-Jewish sights.

Day 3, Prague, Konopiste Castle

Following a leisurely breakfast, you will be met in the lobby of your accommodation by our local expert. Our car will whisk you to Konopiste Castle - A 17th-century castle-turned-hunting-lodge built by the Habsburgs. Here, the nobility relaxed amid the well-stocked hunting grounds surrounding the castle.

Visit a chateau where one of the first electric lifts, electricity and plumbing mains were installed! Walk through the sitting rooms and guest rooms, the dining room and armoury and imagine yourself for a moment in the life of the chateau before World War One. In the official factory museum of the JAWA brand, you can then admire unique exhibits, trophies and historical documents relating to the most famous of Czech motorcycles.

Konopiště Castle, founded as a Gothic fortress, was inspired by French fortresses with a symmetrical layout of the towers, several entrances and drawbridges. Thanks to many modifications, it was gradually converted into a romantic chateau with luxuriously furnished interior modified for the everyday life of the aristocracy.

This thirteenth century castle was once a summer retreat and hunting lodge for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo sparked World War I, had the castle modified to suit his needs at the end of the nineteenth century. Konopiste and its collections of historical weapons, period furniture, paintings and tapestries, offers an intriguing glimpse into royal life at the turn of the last century.
