Day 3, Prague departure, Karlstejn Castle

Following a leisurely breakfast, you will be met in the lobby of your accommodation by our local expert. Our car will whisk you to Karlstejn Castle - a spectacular Disney-like castle perched on a hill, surrounded by lush forests and vineyards.

This wonderful Gothic castle, just 20 miles southwest of Prague, overlooks the tiny picturesque village of Karlstejn. Its unique Czech design of high, peaked towers makes it one of the most frequently visited castles in the Czech Republic. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV erected the fortress in 1348 to protect an invaluable collection of Bohemian treasures, including jewels and relics.

Although the castle had been changed over the years, with such additions as late Gothic staircases and bridges, renovators have removed these additions, restoring the castle to its original medieval state. Visitors must be aware there is a the 20- to 30-minute walk up the hill to the castle, which along with the view, makes up one of the main features that makes the trip spectacular. Inside Karlstejn Castle you will behold the castle's ornate stucco designs and unique collection of weapons.

At the end of our excursion to Karlstejn Castle, you will be transported to the Prague river ship pier for your journey onwards.

Konopiště Castle, founded as a Gothic fortress, was inspired by French fortresses with a symmetrical layout of the towers, several entrances and drawbridges. Thanks to many modifications, it was gradually converted into a romantic chateau with luxuriously furnished interior modified for the everyday life of the aristocracy.

This thirteenth century castle was once a summer retreat and hunting lodge for the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Archduke Franz Ferdinand d'Este, whose assassination in Sarajevo sparked World War I, had the castle modified to suit his needs at the end of the nineteenth century. Konopiste and its collections of historical weapons, period furniture, paintings and tapestries, offers an intriguing glimpse into royal life at the turn of the last century.
