Day 3, Copenhagen departure, Danish Vikings Tour

Following a leisurely morning, you will be met in the lobby of your accommodation by our local expert. Our car will whisk you to the town of Roskilde. The city is ancient, dating from the Viking Age and is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network. It has a pedestrian street running down the center of the city, with many shops, restaurants, and cafes. Several tourist attractions draw visitors from around Denmark and the world.

Bring to life the Viking era with a trip to the ancient Viking capital. Just 20 minutes from Copenhagen by train lies the beautiful town of Roskilde with its impressive cathedral and award winning Viking ship museum. The centrepieces of its collection are the well-preserved remains of five Viking ships, excavated from nearby Roskilde Fjord in the late 1960s.

This tour will take you back to the terrifying period of Viking raids, great sagas and a sense of adventure. Discover what drove the Danes and their Scandinavian cousins to cross the oceans and why no one could stop them. Even as the old Norse gods were replaced with Christianity the battles and blood never stopped. See where the King of Denmark was murdered and hear how the Viking era came to an end.

At the end of our excursion you will be transported to the Copenhagen port for your journey onwards.

Here you will have the opportunity to see the Changing of the Guard.

Next you will visit the Gefion Fountain and the Little Mermaid, inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairytale. Last but not least, pay a visit to one of the many magnificent churches in Copenhagen and pass Rosenborg Castle, where the crown jewels are protected by the Royal Guard.

(Tour Duration is approximately 2.5hrs)

Overnight in Copenhagen.

Day 2, Copenhagen, Hillerod, Frederiksborg Castle, Fredensborg Castle, Kronborg Castle

We begin our day with a leisurely drive out of the city, following the coastline to the region of Zealand. The first destination of your day is the small market town of Hillerød, and as you travel north along the sea-fringed roads, you’ll take in some of Denmark’s most spectacular countryside. Tear your eyes away from the golden-sand beaches to see stretches of soft green hills with only pretty wooden houses to break up the landscape.

When you arrive at regal Frederiksborg Castle -- Hillerød’s star attraction -- admire the building’s Dutch-Renaissance façade, and then head inside for a walking tour. Hear tales of kings Frederik II and Christian IV, who made the castle their home, while admiring the jaw-droppingly lovely interior.

Explore rooms like the Coronation Chapel and the extravagant Riddeshalen banquet hall, before passing through the Marble Gallery, seeing its marble arches dripping with ornamentation. The castle’s grounds are equally spectacular and its French Baroque-style gardens can easily vie for star status. Soak it all up on a walk around outside, following in the footsteps of Danish royalty.

Leave the castle in the early afternoon and take a break in Hillerød for lunch (own expense), before traveling to Fredensborg Castle, set on the shore of Lake Esreum. Stop for photos outside the Italian Baroque castle, hearing of its use as a summer home for the Danish royal family, and then continue your journey south to the town of Elsinore (Helsingør).

Spend time at leisure in the town or you have the option of visiting the UNESCO-listed Kronborg Castle, where Shakespeare’s Hamlet was set. Alternatively, explore the town itself, admiring its delightful Gothic churches and historical houses.

Return to Copenhagen in the late afternoon.
