Start with a panoramic view of the Colosseum from Colle Oppio before skipping the queue to enter the most symbolic of Rome's Landmarks. Tales of gladiators, mock sea-battles and executions will bring the bloody past of the amphitheatre to life. Built of concrete and stone, it was the largest amphitheatre of the Roman Empire, and is considered one of the greatest works of Roman architecture and engineering. It is the largest amphitheatre in the world. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era. It was later reused for such purposes as housing, workshops, quarters for a religious order, a fortress, a quarry, and a Christian shrine.

Continue for a stop at the Arch of Constantine before entering the complex of the Palatine Hill - the most famous of Rome's hills. Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of the city, were said to have been found here by the she-wolf who nursed and raised them.

The last stop of the tour is a walk along the "Via Sacra" inside the Roman Forum. It was for centuries the center of Roman public life. Many of the oldest and most important structures of the ancient city were located on or near the Forum, including the ancient former royal residence, the Regia (8th century BC), and the Temple of Vesta (7th century BC), as well as the surrounding complex of the Vestal Virgins. The Forum today is a sprawling ruin of architectural fragments and intermittent archaeological excavations attracting numerous sightseers. Our tour ends at the Temple, which houses the altar were Julius Caesar was cremated. A short ride takes us to your comfortable hotel.

Day 2, Rome departure, Secrets of Rome – Baths of Caracalla & Knights of Malta

Following a leisurely breakfast, you will be met in the lobby of your accommodation by our local expert.

See the Door of the Knights of Malta. Myths and legends surround the keyhole but you can form your own opinions after your visit. The view through the keyhole is so perfect; you can’t help but wonder if it wasn’t planned that way. Not only is St. Peter’s perfectly framed by the garden arch, but the two domes are in perfect alignment. We will also visit the Baths of Caracalla located by ancient Appian Way in Rome and named after the emperor Caracalla who reigned from A.D. 211-217. The ruins of these baths are enormous and very well preserved with many mosaics still partially intact. This building is among the most monumental and imposing archeological complexes of the entire Imperial epoch.

Our day also takes us to the Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria via Monticello & the Tridente District. This baroque church was built by the architect Carlo Maderno at the beginning of the 17th Century. The church is noteworthy for one of the most beautiful works of Bernini, The Ecstasy of St Teresa.
